FAQ
Can I send you a racquet to string?
Yes. My prices are the same for through-the-mail as my local service. Just send your racquet to me and I will string it and return it to you the same day or within 24hrs. I charge actual shipping costs that it takes to ship back to you. Make sure to fill out a Service Order Form and include it with your racquet.
How long does it take to string my racquet?
My goal is to provide a 24hr turnaround time. Many times, I can have it ready the same day.
Do you charge extra for the strings?
No. My charges are for labor plus my cost for the string. I buy in bulk and can get good deals to pass on to my customers. Go to the Services Pricing page for details.
Can I provide my own strings?
Yes. I charge for the labor only and am happy to string your racquet with your strings. However, no warranty applies.
I have a racquetball frame. Can you string it?
Yes. I can string most any racquetball racquet frame. I also carry a good selection of racquetball grips. For racquetball info, go to the racquetball page.
Can you replace my grip?
Yes. Check out my inventory and I can order most any grip available and install it for you as soon as I get it.
Can you increase/decrease my grip size?
Currently, I can increase your grip size only. However, I am going to be offering a grip reduction and custom grip molding service soon.
You don't have my string listed on your site. Can you get it for me?
Yes. There are times that I have strings that aren't listed on the website. Just call or email me to see what I have on hand. If I don't have what you want, I can order any string made.
Will you string my racquet outside the manufacturers recommended tension guidelines?
Generally, no. Stringing outside the mfg guidelines will void your frame's warranty and can risk breaking your frame.
Can you string hybrid strings?
Yes. I do this all the time and play with a hybrid setup myself. It's a very effective way to blend the best of 2 different string playing characteristics. The combinations are virtually limitless. Pros are going to hybrid setups almost exclusively in their racquets.
Can you pickup/deliver my racquet?
Yes. For $4, I can pickup and deliver your racquet in the Wichita metro area. This applies to Monday through Friday only. No Saturday or Sunday service. Friday's pickups will be delivered on Monday.
How often should I restring?
This is difficult to say for sure but the generally acceptable idea is to string your racquet the same number of times as you play per week over the year. So, if you play 3 times per week, then restring 3 times per year. However, there are many exceptions to this depending on your level of play, the type of string you play, your budget, your style of play, among other things. However, a more quantitative and more accurate way I measure this is if your tension decreases by a certain %. For example, if you are a recreational player, you should restring if the racquet looses 25% of its original tension. The better the player you are, the less tension loss you should allow before re-stringing. Top players should consider re-stringing at 10% tension loss. I have a tension meter that can measure this anytime you like. Just bring your racquet by and I'll check it for you for no charge. I also provide a sticker on your racquet with the beginning tension to check against in case you forget. I also have it on file.
Can you help me decide on the type of string for my game?
Yes. Contact me to discuss your needs. Sometimes, it takes a few different tries to discover your optimum string and tension. I'll work with you to help you find your best string. Since I playtest lots of strings, I can help you learn about the different string characteristics. Also, I write a blog on some of the strings and racquets I have tested.
Can you custom mold my grip?
Not at this time but I will be offering this service soon. Keep checking back for further details.
I have arm pain. Do you have strings that will help?
Yes. There are several strings to choose from. Generally, you'll want to stay with a softer string, such as a multifilament, synthetic gut or even natural gut. I have suffered this myself and had to learn the hard way - through trial and error.
Can you change the weighting on my racquet?
Yes. There are lots of different ways to change the way your racquet feels and this can be achieved through custom weighting. I can the swingweight (or, the way it "feels" when swinging the racquet) and/or the overall weight of the racquet. I can generally only add weight but there are some ways to decrease the weight by small amounts.
I have an old racquet, can you re-string and service it?
Usually. I have stringing patterns for every racquet ever made. But, if the grommets are in poor condition, new grommet sets may not be available and stringing it may be dicey. I'll always give it a try!
Do you follow any professional guidelines?
Yes. I am a member of the United States Racquet Stringer's Association (USRSA) and follow their stringing guidelines. I also have the Master Racquet Technician (MRT) certification from the USRSA showing my commitment for racquet service. Only about 600 people worldwide have a MRT certification. This certification is a must for all pro tour stringers.
How much experience do you have?
I have been playing tennis for 35+ years and have been stringing racquets for 25+ years. I started stringing for myself and it's grown into stringing for others. I am continually updated both my physical equipment and the training I get. I have attended the Grand Slam Stringer's Symposium in Orlando, Fl where new strings, techniques and technologies are discussed and introduced. As mentioned above, I am a certified stringer and a Master Racquet Technician.
What methods of payment do you take?
Cash, Check or PayPal. Make all checks out to Dan Gaskell.
Can you string gut?
Yes. I generally have a few sets in stock but I may have to order them for you. Gut has a shelf life of around a year or so, so I don't keep a lot of it on hand since it's more expensive than any other string.
What strings do you offer?
I carry all types of strings. Synthetic gut, natural gut, poly, multifilaments. There are several different variations of each type so you can check my current inventory or contact me.
Do you do any testing?
Yes. I personally test every string I carry myself and am also a playtester for Wilson/Luxilon. I get strings to test before they come on the market and give my opinion back to the company. I also write a blog discussing some of the strings I have tested.
Can you customize racquets?
Yes. I am able to change grips, increase grip size, install grommets, provide weight information, repair grommets, replace butt caps and racquet match (match swingweights, balance and weight) for each of your racquets. I currently do not provide a custom grip molding service but will be offering this in the near future.
What are your prices?
Please check HERE for my current pricing list.
What kind of stringer do you use?
I use an Alpha stringer with an electronic tensioning head. This is a professional stringing machine and is very accurate. It has the ability to calibrate itself on every pull. Electronic stringers are generally accepted as the most accurate way to achieve a consistent stringbed.
How do I contact you?
Contact me through email or by phone. You can also fax me at (316) 773-1383.
Can you replace grommets?
Yes. Since there are so many different grommets available, I don't carry every set made so I generally have to order them individually. Just let me know what your racquet model is and I can order them right away. Also, I may discover that you need to replace your grommets while I'm inspecting it. If necessary, I can make temporary repairs (nylon tubing) and order a new set of grommets for the next time you bring in your racquet for re-stringing.
Do you inspect my racquet before stringing?
Yes. I inspect your racquet from tip to tip examining the butt cap, grip, frame and grommet condition according to USRSA guidelines. If I find a problem with your racquet, I will let you know what I find and inform you of the steps it'll take to repair it.
Where are you located?
Wichita, Kansas.
Do you play tennis?
Yes. I have played for 35+ years from high school, college, adult tourmaments and leagues. I am rated a 4.5 and have been ranked as high as #1 in singles and doubles in the Kansas district in past years. I am currently ranked in the top 10 of the Missouri Valley Section of the men's 4.5 singles. I love to play tennis and follow it closely. It really is sport of a lifetime!!
I forgot when I last strung with you and what kind of string is in the racquet.
No worries. I keep complete records of all of your information including the string type, date, tension, etc.
What is racquet matching and why would I want to have my racquets matched?
Basically, racquet matching is taking all your racquets and getting them to match swingweight, weight and balance. When you break a string and reach into your bag for another racquet, you want it to feel the same as the one that just broke! Racquet manufacturers produce racquets within tolerences and can vary greatly, even in the same model. Through a series of testing and strategic weighting, we can make each of your racquets feel the same.
